Artist Statement: From Above and Below

About a year ago, I had made an intention to get back into my art practice, I rediscovered in my art supplies a discarded pile of abstract images. They were satellite images of the earth taken by NASA in 1972, capturing the world as it was then from space. Shaking off the dust I found latitude and longitude coordinates and typed them into google earth in order to discover the locations. This process drew me in to ask other questions about that land, specifically what might grow in each of these locations that could be edible for humans and encourage life to flourish.

Currently as a mother of small children, I can’t help but consider the broad implications of care, both for humanity as well as the land. I wonder what the land will be like for children as they grow up and future generations. The health of the soil impacts the plants that grow to provide food. This can bring more health and wholeness to our future selves if we take the time to care and change our practices towards more sustainability and environmental health. How does care impact the creative process and what might it look like for care to become sustainable not only for one another but for the place we find sustenance and that we call home, Mother Earth?
